Buying Guide: Quarter Horse, Paint Horse & Appaloosa
How to Buy a Quarter Horse in Europe — Buyer's Guide
The Quarter Horse is the world's most popular and versatile western breed: balanced temperament, ease of training and a compact, powerful build make it the ideal partner for disciplines like Reining, Cutting, Western Pleasure and leisure riding. This guide helps you make the right purchase decision whether you're shopping in Germany, Italy, Austria or elsewhere in Europe.
What to look for before buying
Pedigree and bloodlines. Foundation lines (Smart Little Lena, Peppy San Badger, Doc Bar) are known for balanced temperament and cattle instinct. Reining lines (Shiners, Gunners, Spooks) produce athletic horses with excellent collection and fluid movement. Always ask for the full pedigree and check the parents' competition records.
Health and genetic testing. Quarter Horses can carry certain hereditary conditions. Before buying, request test results for PSSM1 (Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy), HERDA (Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia), GBED (Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency) and HYPP (Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis). A trustworthy seller provides these certificates without hesitation. If both parents test negative, testing the offspring is often unnecessary.
Height and conformation. A well-built discipline Quarter Horse typically stands between 148 and 158 cm. Look for a short, level topline, a muscular and well-angled hindquarter, and clean joints throughout. Avoid horses with back-knees or excessively upright pasterns.
Training level. Distinguish between green-broke horses, horses with a competition record (shown) and prospects yet to be trained. A horse with a verifiable show record commands a premium, but a quality prospect with excellent bloodlines can be a rewarding investment.
Paint Horse and Appaloosa: the differences
The Paint Horse shares the same bloodlines as the Quarter Horse but is distinguished by its pinto coat pattern (tobiano, overo or tovero). It is equally suited to Reining, Pleasure and All-Around. The Appaloosa carries Nez Percé blood and often has a more independent temperament; it excels at Trail, light Endurance and ranch work. Both breeds enjoy a solid market across Europe.
