Il Quarter Horse è la razza western più versatile e diffusa al mondo: ottimo temperamento, facilità di addestramento e una muscolatura corta e potente lo rendono il compagno ideale per discipline come Reining, Cutting, Western Pleasure e il turismo equestre. Cosa guardare prima di comprare
Genealogia e linee di sangue. Le linee Foundation (Smart Little Lena, Peppy San Badger, Doc Bar) sono note per carattere equilibrato e attitudine al lavoro sul bovino. Le linee Reining (Shiners, Gunners, Spooks) producono cavalli atletici con ottima flessibilità e movimenti racciolti. Prima di acquistare, chiedi sempre la genealogia completa e verifica le prestazioni dei genitori nelle competizioni.
Salute e test genetici. I Quarter Horse sono soggetti ad alcune malattie genetiche ereditarie. Prima dell'acquisto chiedi i risultati dei test per PSSM1 (Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy), HERDA (Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia), GBED (Glycogen Branching Enzyme Deficiency) e HYPP (Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis). Un venditore serio fornisce questi certificati volentieri. Se i genitori sono testati negativi, in molti casi non è necessario testare il figlio.
Stockmaß e conformazione. Un buon Quarter Horse da disciplina ha solitamente un'altezza tra 148 e 158 cm. Cerca una schiena corta e orizzontale, una groppa muscolosa e ben angolata, e arti con articolazioni pulite. Evita cavalli con ginocchia indietro (back-knees) o pastorali eccessivamente verticali.
Livello di addestramento. Distingui tra cavalli partiti a tre anni (broke), cavalli con competizioni alle spalle (shown) e cavalli da programmare da zero (prospect). Un cavallo con show record verificabile vale di più, ma un buon prospect con ottima genealogia può essere un investimento interessante.
Paint Horse e Appaloosa: le differenze
Il Paint Horse condivide le stesse linee di sangue del Quarter Horse ma si distingue per il mantello pinto (tobiano, overo o tovero). È ugualmente adatto a Reining, Pleasure e All-Around. L'Appaloosa porta sangue Nez Percé e ha un temperamento spesso più indipendente; eccelle in Trail, Endurance leggero e lavoro da ranch. Entrambe le razze godono di un mercato solido in Europa.
